About Us

Prakasam District in Andhra Pradesh is one of the agricultural districts and also rich in Saree Weaving. Ongole bulls are  very much famous. Next to agriculture and handlooms .Practicing of handicrafts are the main occupation.

Sameem Mahila Mandali, 4th line, Gopal Nagr, Ongole, Prakasam District  is a voluntary organization registered under Societies Act XXI of 1860 during the year 1987 and has been working for the development of Rural poor. With this back ground it has  taken up to implement the AHVY scheme of office of the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts in five clusters at Addanki & Darsi for Leather Puppets, PRC Thanda for Banjara Embroidery,Manduvaripalem for Hand Embroidery, Swarnandhrapattapu Palem for palm leaf products and Ongole Town for  Crochet Laces, in Prakasam District for the past 6 years skill up gradation programmes. Design Development workshops were conducted for increasing production capacity and new product range as per Market need.

The present catalogue is being developed for ventilating the skills acquired by these rural poor and to extend constant marketing support to the artisans of clusters by way of receiving orders. It is aimed that this catalogue to give sufficient publicity and exposure for the products developed by these cluster artisans.

Sameem Mahila Mandali, Ongole, Prakasam District, Ap extends its sincere thanks to the Development Commissioer (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of  India, New Delhi for their encouragement and support to our organization for developing handicrafts crafts clusters in this area through their special scheme named “Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hasth Shilp Vikas Yojana” This catalogue also been brought our with financial support from office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts. The department extends support in organizing events tapping the opportunities for domestic regional market.

Mission: Reduce poverty of remote area women through our handicrafts skill development activities, micro finance and care services of disabled, orphan children.

Leather Puppets: Shadow puppet plays are one of the ancient arts practiced in Andhra Pradesh by a set of people hailed from “Are Maratha Community” said to have migrated from Maharashtra more than 200 years ago and settled in Andhra Pradesh in different districts. Around 60 people have settled in Darsi &Addanki.

The utility oriented products developed by these artisans, such as Lamp Shades, wall decoratives are included in this catalogue.

Banjara Embroidery: Fine embroidered works with mirrors attract the present city public in a large way. Lambada Tribes, a nomadic community said to have migrated from Rajasthan settled the different Tandas of Andhra Pradesh. Around 150 Lambada families are settled in PRC Tanda. The skills of the Lambada women in producing their own Mirror embroidered garments have been upgraded and fine variety of products such s cushion covers, money purses, Batwas etc., were developed. These products included in the present catalogue.

Palm leaf Products: Palm trees are abundantly available at Swarnandhra Pattapuu Palem a small village situated near Seashore. While men go for fishing, ladies wanted to pursue some economic activity. A good range of utility cum decorative products is being developed and regularly produced by these women folk. Their products are included.
